On Sunday, August 9, Westbank and the Peterson Group are teaming up to sponsor Chess2Inspire – an organization that promotes chess to children – to host its first annual active chess tournament at The Lauren, their new rental building in Vancouver’s West End.

The Lauren integrated built-in chess tables into its outdoor landscape several months ago to enhance community activity. It will have adult and junior competitors, with $1,000 in cash prizes and $600 in gift certificates from West End retailers given to winners.

“Chess is an extremely captivating game. It’s a great way for adults and children to connect, and teaches valuable skills to young people. Besides that, it’s a lot of fun,” said Tournament Director Stephen Wright. “Chess2Inspire was founded to keep children engaged in this engrossing and fascinating battle of wits, and we hope this tournament will serve as additional encouragement.”

The tournament, best suited to players with some chess skills (a rating over 800 is recommended), and pre-registration, including $35 entry fee, is required. There are only 42 spaces available and registration is almost full, but spectators are encouraged.

The 186-unit Lauren, which opened in 2014, is the first new purpose-built market rental building to be opened in the West End in more than two decades.
